LECTURES

Mr Martin brief us about our project of this module. We are required to download Premier Pro for future  editing tools, we started our first exercise which is an intro to premier and edit accordingly to each single video that are given to us.

During week 2 class, we learned about framing with different size shots. Mr Martin also provided us some video example and determine what shot is it.

Cinematography
  • Motion picture/Film/Video is made up of many shots. 
  • Each shot requires placing the camera in the best position for that particular moment in the narrative. 
  • Shot is continuous view shot by one camera without interruption. 
  • Sequence is a series of scenes, or shots, complete in itself. 
  • Scene defines the place or setting where the action is laid. 
  • A scene may consist of series of shots or sequences depicting a continuous event.

During class activity, our task was to shoot 8 different size shots with one partner during this shooting exercise, we go bellevue and Block E balcony to finish our shooting.

Story Structure
  1. Recap : The set of all the events in cause-effect relationship occuring in time and space, both the ones explicitly presented and those the viewer infers, constitutes the story.
  2. Beginning: Setup / introduction of a story
  3. Middle: Confrontation of a problem
  4. End: Resolution of problems

Act 1
BEGINNING/SETUP:
  1. To introduce the world.
  2. To introduce the main characters.
  3. To establish the dramatic situation.
  4. Leads to an incident that complicates the story (PLOT POINT 1).
Act 2
MIDDLE/CONFRONTATION:
  1. Known as ‘Rising Action’.
  2. To develop obstacles / complications.
  3. Leads to climax of the story (PLOT POINT 2).
Act 3
END/RESOLUTION:
  1. Ending of climax
  2. Answer to all obstacles / problems
  3. Tying the loose ends

Week 4/Mise En Scène
In French, it literally means: mise (putting) en (on) scène (stage) .It refers to what we see onscreen; its visuals; meaning, all of the elements that appear on camera and their arrangement.
  • Composition: Composition is the deliberate selection of frames and camera angles that make up a shot. Manipulating composition can accentuate the emotional themes of the story and communicate a sense (or lack) of meaning to the audience.
  • Set Design: refers to everything the audience sees within a particular scene. These details help build out the world of the location and add even more context to the story. 
  • Lighting: Lighting is often the tool that conveys mood most clearly. High-key lighting, often used in musicals and romantic comedies, relies on hard light to minimise shadows. Low-key lighting, often used in horror movies.
  • Costume and Props: Costume is one of the most useful tools in communicating a character’s thoughts and journey.
  • Depth of Space: Depth is determined by the distances between objects, people, and scenery, influenced by their placement along with camera location and lens choice.
Introduce to Production Team

1. Producer : 
The producer initiates, coordinates, supervises, and controls matters such as raising funding, hiring key personnel, contracting and arranging for distributors.

2. Screenwriter: 
Screenwriter shapes the sequence of events in a film so that the story will unfold logically and in an interesting way.

3. Director : 
The director is responsible for overseeing the creative aspects of a film, including controlling the content and flow of the film's plot--

4. Assistant Director : 
A.D, assists the production manager and director. They oversee day-to-day management of the cast and crew scheduling, equipment, script, and the set.

5. Director of Photography/ Cinematographer :
DoP makes decisions on lighting and framing of scenes in conjunction with the film's director.

6. Gaffer:
The gaffer is the head of the electrical department, responsible for the design and execution of the lighting plan for a production. Sometimes the gaffer is credited as "Chief Lighting Technician".

7. Sound Recordist:
The Sound Recordist is head of the sound department on set, responsible for recording all sound during filming.

8. Production Designer:
Responsible for creating the physical, visual appearance of the film - settings, costumes, props, character makeup.

9. Film Editor:
Assembles the various shots into a coherent film, working closely with the director.

10. Visual Effects Artist:
Visual effects artist responsible for compositing images from different sources such as video, film, computer generated 3-D imagery, 2-D animations, matte paintings and text.

11. Sound Designer:
In charge of the post-production sound of a movie.

WEEK 2/ PROJECT 1
Exercise 1: Audio Editing Exercise

Instructions:
  1. Download the video
  2. Record all dialogues with your phone (your voice)
  3. Prepare the spreadsheet.

The dialog volume should between -6db &-12db, so I record again the girl's dialog and make sure my voice is loud enough.

WEEK 7/ PROJECT 1

For the next exercise , we were task to do the sound shaping exercise in Adobe Audition. After listening and watching tutorial provided by Mr Martin. Record your own voice for 5 seconds for Exercise 2 submission. We are required to do 5 sound shaping:
  1. Voice of phone call.
  2. Voice coming from inside of closet.
  3. Voice of toilet/bathroom.
  4. Underground cave.
  5. Alien/ Orc voice

Apply and learn 2 main effects : Parametric Equalizer and Reverb to edit the hertz 

1. Phone Call : Bring down bass , treble, raise mid range in between 500Hz to 2kHz

3. Voice of toilet/bathroom: Bring up decay time, bring up dry output.

REFLECTION


Experience:
I thought it was a very difficult task when I heard the briefing about audio dubbing in the first week, but after the reminder and from Mr Martin I am more confident of doing it well and able to complete it before the deadline. At the progression stage, I don't understand why we should create a spreadsheet and paste all the link inside it, I feel like this action will be wasting our time and a bit troublesome. After I finish filling in all the sound effect that are needed lead me more clearly of the sequence to import in Premium pro., allow me to easier find what sound effect I have missed.

Findings:
The task make me be more familiar with the sound setting in Premium Pro such as pitch shifter, volume, speed, fade in and fade out. I also gain the knowledge of each track should have own position, and own one character only to avoid mess up.
