Tittle: Echoes of Earth
Description:
I've chosen to focus on SDG12: Responsible Consumption and Production. The concept involves utilising waste materials to create a mixed media artwork.
After the explosion, thick and scorching smoke permeates to the bottom of the Earth, yet to ascend upwards. On the left side, there's our beautiful environment, even with a rainbow, while on the right side, it's predictably polluted, engulfed in black smoke. Overall, it's like a pause button pressed while the explosion hasn't completely shattered the Earth. This approach aligns with SDG 12 by advocating for the reuse and repurposing of materials. It serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of failing to reduce waste and use resources wisely.
The contrast between bright, ethereal shades of blue representing the "ideal world" and deep, somber hues of brown depicting the "polluted world" creates a powerful visual impact. Utilising symmetrical balance of visual weight to equalise the sizes of two different worlds conveys the message that continued environmental pollution will result in the final world occupying the same area as the original world. The principle of variety is employed through a diverse array of materials, shapes, texture creatively used to represent various elements enriching the piece with liveliness.
REFLECTIONS
What have I learnt in this module?
In this module, I've learned in detail about each design principle. Even the lecture notes provide clear and concise examples, making it easier for me to understand. I didn't realize there were so many design principles until now. It feels like learning the principles behind artwork, rather than just creating for the sake of it. Understanding these principles has enabled me to analyze artwork or create one with more depth. Additionally, I've learned the importance of analysing a piece of artwork thoroughly, from surface observations to analysing the design principles employed by the artist and deciphering the intended meaning.
What did I enjoy the most?
What I enjoyed the most was the process of creating the final artwork. I gathered waste materials from various corners of my home and meticulously designed, painted, cut, and glued them step by step. It made me feel completely immersed in the world of art for that day, disconnected from the outside world, and filled with relaxation and a sense of accomplishment.
What did I not enjoy the most?
Basically, what I least enjoyed was the initial process of finding an artwork related to the SDG goals. Because every artwork I found beautiful seemed to have no direct connection to the SDG goals, it felt like I was constantly confined and restricted to that direction. Even after searching for a long time, I didn't know which one was most suitable, so I felt very confused.
What have I learnt about myself through this module?
Through this module, I have learned several things about myself. Firstly, I discovered that I have a passion for creativity and art, particularly in the process of creating artwork from waste materials. This process allowed me to tap into my creativity and resourcefulness, finding beauty and meaning in unexpected places.Secondly, I learned that I am capable of stepping outside of my comfort zone and exploring new concepts and ideas. Despite initially feeling uncertain about finding an artwork related to the SDG goals, I persevered and ultimately gained a deeper understanding of the principles behind art and design.Overall, this module has helped me better understand my strengths, interests, and values, paving the way for further personal and artistic growth in the future.
What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?
One significant change is my increased understanding of the importance of intentionality and purpose in art. Initially, I may have been more focused on aesthetics alone, but now I recognize the power of art to convey meaningful messages and promote social or environmental causes. This shift has broadened my perspective on what constitutes successful artwork.Another change is my enhanced appreciation for sustainability and environmental consciousness. Through exploring SDG 12 and creating artwork from waste materials, I have become more aware of the environmental impact of my actions and the potential for creative solutions to address sustainability challenges.
However, some aspects of my learning journey remain constant. For instance, my passion for creativity and art has always been a driving force, and this module has only strengthened it. Additionally, my commitment to learning and growth has remained steadfast, as evidenced by my willingness to embrace new concepts and ideas, even when they initially seemed challenging.
What could be improved in this module?
I need to learn more about SDG goals and read more to understand design principles better. Also, I realize I shouldn't just skim the surface when I work on things. I need to think more about why I'm learning, analyzing, and creating. It's crucial not to slack off just because this module may seem relatively easy; every module holds its own learning significance. Every module has something important to teach us. I really appreciate Mr. Zoen's encouragement and feedback. It's helped me learn a lot.
